The Alps and the Alpine Convention
... first traces of man dating back perhaps 100,000 years, permanent settlements around 7,000 years ago, four world languages, seven other languages, countless dialects and traditions. Europe’s roof garden is 1,200 km long and 300 km wide; it covers a surface area of approx. 200,000 km², stretches from the Mediterranean up to an altitude of 4808 m, and is home to a wealth of eco-systems. As defined in the Alpine Convention, the region of the Alps is home to some 13 million people. The 190.912 sq.km. contained within the Alpine arc comprise the territory of seven countries, 83 regions (NUTS 3) and about 6,200 communities. With their unique combination of natural and cultural history, the Alps have become a living space, an economic area and a recreational playground of eminent importance at the heart of the European continent.

The Alpine Convention is the basis of the network of municipalities. "Alliance in the Alps" sees the Alpine Convention as a support instrument, guideline and aid when planning for life in the Alpine region in the future.
