Approved Projects
During the oncoming two years 20 projects are going to be co-financed by dynAlp-climate - the climate project of the network of municipalities "Alliance in the Alps". Out of 45 submitted applications the jury chose eight projects from Italy, three from France and Switzerland, two from Germany and Slovenia as well as one from Austria and one from Liechtenstein. In total dynAlp-climate is providing more than 300.000 € for the climate projects. All chosen projects make a contribution to climate protection or provide adaptation strategies to climate change. The description of all projects in English is listed below.
Wine and climate protection
Electric viticultural machines are being used on 100 hectares of vineyards in the Valais. The electricity is generated by small hydroelectric power plants and photovoltaic installations. Twenty vintners are tending their vineyards in near-natural conditions and dispense with the use of helicopters. Climate-friendly agriculture is enabled by the use of existing electrical equipment (motor-powered scythe, hedge cutters) and new equipment developed thanks to the project (backpack sprayers, crawler transporters, crawler tractor). Carbon emissions are reduced by 0.4 kg per bottle of wine as a result.
Building of 4 ultra-low energy "PassivHaus" homes at Auzet
Construction of 2 groups of 2 ultra-low energy semi-detached social housing units in the heart of the village of Auzet. Each home has a living surface of 116 m² split over 2 levels. The 2 units, consisting of a timber shell, are prefabricated and then assembled on site. An Austrian company was commissioned with the preliminary study (architecture, thermal analysis, quote). An invitation to tender for general contractors is to be made as part of a public procurement for conception-completion.
Construction of a sports hall - design for a high energy efficiency building
The definition and design study for the building that constitutes the present call for participation is about to be launched. The Commune having decided that, where new builds are concerned, the PASSIVHAUS standard should be systematically considered and implemented once its feasibility is established, the study in question is to incorporate this political choice. In the event of technical and/or economic impossibility, the best energy efficiency is to be sought.
Plan Transport Oisans
This project concerns:
- carrying out a study to assess the means of transport currently in place on the territory of the community of municipalities of Oisans and to access that territory (individual transport, public transport, school bus, cycling, hiking trails...).
- analying the transport needs - drawing up a transport plan that integrates alternative, "softer" means of transport for both the resident population and for holidaymakers.

Four towns, one single approach
The underlying idea is to create a tourist offering that is both alternative and complementary to skiing. This will require working in synergy with neighbouring municipalities, stakeholders and nearby skiing stations to propose alternative activities, even in the absence of seasonal snow, that are grounded in sustainability and transferability. Action will be geared to developing rural, cultural and environmentally friendly tourist options that also reinforce the development policies thus far adopted by the four small municipalities based on enhancing their special linguistic, religious and cultural heritage as well as the environmental optimization proposal made by an important municipality. Each single initiative developed thus far has been based on a common underlying development strategy in line with the principles of the Convention of the Alps and its protocols.
The river TAGLIAMENTO: a unique Alpine river in Europe
Several experts have underlined how the flood plain lying along the river Tagliamento between the bridges of Pinzano and Dignano is a major environmental and natural beauty site. They point out how any intervention in the area would jeopardise the ecosystem around the river and harm the landscape and its value as a recreational area.
Energy Optimization of Municipal Buildings - Study of Typical Intervention Plan
The project will conduct an in-depth survey of buildings owned by the municipality. The most suitable corrective technical solutions to improve energy efficiency will be studied: outer thermal cladding; photovoltaic systems; supplementary heating from solar collectors; the use of bio-compostable materials, etc. The results will be presented to the general public as an encouragement to citizens to proceed with energy optimization of their own homes.
Local Help Desk to promote energy saving and the use of renewable energy sources
The project aims to develop an information Help Desk for local authorities, businesses and citizens to raise awareness of and develop a new energy saving mindset along with greater understanding of energy and environmental issues in order to encourage use of renewable energy sources. Action will include dissemination of information, training, demostrations and technical assistance. Schools will be actively involved.
PUBBLICHENERGIE - Economically responsible initiatives
Pubblichenergie was started in 2010 as a project shared by five municipalities in the Province of Belluno and two Mountains Communities. In 2010, the focus was on photovoltaic installation with 14 public evening meetings, an energy Help Desk open throughout the year in 5 municipalities and a telephone and e-mail help line service. Pubblichenergie also co-ordinated a broad citizens' purchase group for those intending to install a photovoltaic plant.
Firewood Production Project to Meet Local Energy Needs
Italy is the world's largest importer of firewood (ISPRA Report 97/2009), maining from eastern European countries. At the same time, the abandonment of the country's coppice woods is having a negative impact in environmental, landscape and socio-economic terms. In Budoia practically the only available wood on the market for private use is imported while the surrounding cuttable stands are no longer being tended. Forestry and woodcutting must be reinstated and a local supply chain for energy-producing firewood created.
Relieve the mountains
A local mule breeder currently makes available his animals to carry children and/or luggage from designated points along the valley up to mountain retreats, offering an alternative form of environment-friendly transport. There is a need to identify former foot- and mule paths no longer in use (e.g. the foot- and mule paths used during the First World War) and restore them to safe use.
Invitation to the Forest
The objective of the "Invitation to the Forest" project is the development of a personal attitude to nature, familiarization with the consequences of storms, identification of their causes, perception of changes. The project is designed in the form of workshops in the vicinity of kindergartens and schools. Participants will learn about the language of nature, forest, medicinal herbs, causes and consequences of climate changes, etc. The fact that there are four municipalities joined in the project will provide an opportunity to get to know different environments and exchange experience as well as to give the project greater visibility. In addition to its education value, the project is also promotional. By organising events at schools, kindergartens and in public places, by publishing a leaflet and posters, by preparing a short film and a photography exhibition in nature as well as by presenting the project at 6th forest pedagogy congress, we would like to encourage all citizens of our municipalities and beyond to reflect on the negative consequences of our way of life and our activities affecting the environment and to take action to improve the situation.
"Ecopackaging - Straight from the Countryside"
By means of the project ""Ecopackaging - Straight from the Countryside"" we wish to realise the idea of common packaging for Straight from the Countryside suppliers, which we want to start implementing as a pilot project in the Kamnik municipality first and then transfer elsewhere in Srce Slovenije (Heart of Slovenia).
We will develop eco-friendly packaging, which will help raise consumers' environmental awareness and reduce the carbon footprint. By using common packaging we will contribute to better recognizability of ""Straight from the Countryside"" network.

My Clime-mate
Young people from 6 different regions and countries in the Alps develop together climate activities and implement them. In three bilateral exchange projects they learn more about climate, about themselves and about the different cultures. The youth exchanges provide a better understanding to the young people of the Alps as a living space and of the climate change.
Ludesch climate protection project - a municipality takes action
Climate protection requires measures in all areas of our lives: more than 20 climate-efficient and awareness-raising activities are to be undertaken by 2013. The aim is to reach as many people as possible. The main themes are: leisure and local energy supply in schools, homes and municipality mobility. The measures link up various target groups (e.g. schoolchildren and local suppliers). All aspects of sustainability are also intentionally incorporated (climate protection, the economic, social issues).
Naturns - the energy-active municipality
The awareness-raising campaigns revolve around energy-saving competitions/energy scheme weeks where schoolchildren, families and civil servants bet with the local authority that they can lower their energy consumption by 10% as part of the Action Weeks. Naturns also plans to set up an Energy Team to analyse the current energy use and define energy policy objectives so that in the long term zero-carbon emissions and/or energy self-sufficiency are achieved.
Sattel steps on the gas - but in a carbon-neutral way
Most of the greenhouse gas emissions from transport in the Alps are due to motorised road traffic (93%), with the majority caused by leisure and tourist traffic. That is why the municipality wants to tackle the issue of tourist travel to the holiday destination. CO2 emissions also occur in many other areas of the tourism value added chain. So Sattel is seeking to draw up a climate mission statement for tourism, with objectives and specific tourist offers.
The energy driving licence - an intensive course aimed at discovering energy and climate protection
This intensive course teaches pupils about energy through experiments (forms of energy/electricity generation); what do we need energy for? Where does it come from? (regenerative/fossil fuels/nuclear power); what does the issue of energy have to do with climate protection? (greenhouse gases); and where can energy savings be made? The emphasis is on what each and everyone of us can do at home/at school to help save energy (electricity and heating consumption).
Silenen ensures greater energy efficiency in buildings
According to the survey (see enclosed questionnaire) 24 building owners are interested in the energy check, 30 in replacing the circulating pumps, and 27 in installing solar systems. This will trigger investments of around €450,000. The project co-ordinates the activities with the building owners. A conservative estimate of anticipated energy savings puts the figure at around 70,000 KWh p.a.
Nature Pavilion - Exhibitions/events on climate change and climate protection
Further exhibitions/events on climate change and climate protection are to be organised in 2011 and 2012.
